Who We Are

Culture South West | The Directors | Culture South West Staff

Culture South West's role is to help improve the quality and range of cultural activity available to those living in or visiting our region and support the further development of our creative industries.

As a starting point, we take cultural activity to mean the arts in their various forms, recreational and sporting activities, the appreciation of our landscape and what we've built on it or used it for, visiting our museums, libraries and galleries.

The Department for Culture, Media and Sport defines the creative industries as 'those industries that have their origin in individual creativity, skill and talent and which have a potential for wealth and job creation through the generation and exploitation of intellectual property'. There are thirteen sub-sectors of the creative industries; Advertising, Architecture, Art and Antiques Market, Crafts, Design, Designer Fashion, Film and Video, Interactive Leisure Software, Music, Performing Arts, Publishing, Software and Computer Services and Television and Radio

Our brief is to:

  • Provide the main focus and channel for representing the whole spectrum of cultural and creative interests in the region
  • Create a common vision expressed in a cultural strategy for the region, In Search of Chunky Dunsters (2001, PDF or RTF format), that will take us into the future
  • Advise key regional bodies including the Regional Development Agency, and in future the Regional Assembly on cultural issues

Culture South West is one of the eight regional consortiums established by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport in 1999.
