The weather is pretty terrible no matter where you live at the moment, which is why millions of families will now spend most of their time considering different home improvement jobs ready for the summer.

Though some will look towards fitting a new kitchen or bathroom; others will be slightly less ambitious and more inclined to settle for some basic lounge or living room redesign. Personally, I have to admit the latter category sounds more appealing, which is why I’m writing this short post today. Hopefully, after you’ve read through all my advice, you’ll be more inclined to opt for something a little more basic too.

Don’t get me wrong, I have no official design qualifications, nor have I ever been on the TV alongside Laurence Llewelyn Bowen, but I have been married for over twenty years and in that time I’ve never had one complaint about my abilities. So, if you’re interested in learning a bit more and hopefully picking up some cool ideas, take a few minutes to read through the remainder of this post, and I’ll try to keep it all pretty simple.

Considering Colour Schemes

Now, I realise during cold temperatures it can be tempting to opt for warm, dark colours, but as it will soon be summer you need to avoid doing this wherever possible. For living rooms, it’s always a good idea to opt for pale colours like green or yellow, although having one dark feature wall does sometimes provide the kind of aesthetic you’re looking for.

Looking At Flooring Solutions

Again, though it is tempting to lay some thick carpet so your feet never get cold, we all know that buying laminate and laying that will provide the most luxurious look. Also, your friends are much more likely to get jealous if your home looks more like a cottage than a semi-detached townhouse inside. I call this the tardis effect. So, make sure you stick with wood instead of carpet if at all possible. That said; there’s nothing wrong with laying a large rug on top if you’re worried about comfort.

Choosing A Fireplace

Even if your property has a working chimney, it’s never wise to opt for a coal fire, as these tend to produce unimaginable amounts of dirt and dust. Instead, buy an electric product that imitates a traditional fireplace and make sure you use tempered glass for the surrounding encasement. This type of glass is much stronger than the standard type, and so it’s less likely to crack or smash.

Purchasing New Furniture

Finally, the best way to change the feel of any room is to change the furniture contained within. This could be pretty expensive though, and so it’s a good idea you start saving as soon as possible if this is something that sounds appealing. In fact, now is the best time to buy furniture from most high street stores, because they often drop prices just after Christmas.

Anyway folks, I’ve got to head off now and give a friend some handy tips about redesigning his kitchen. You should have enough information to make a good start now. See you soon!
