Not everyone has green thumbs, and we have all had a plant disaster or five. So don’t be dissuaded from growing plants just because you have failed a few times.
Some plants are a lot easier to grow than others, and similarly some plants don’t require as much light as others – meaning they are less likely to shrivel and die if they don’t get constant sunlight.
We have pulled together 6 houseplants that are easy to grow, relatively undemanding, and that should grow in lower light.
Spider Plant
If you can give a spider plant it will enjoy it, but it does well in low light and can handle pretty much any conditions in your house.
As you may be able to see from the picture above, Spider Plants love to throw off babies that will cascade down, and which you can break off and easily propagate.
Spider plants do great in soil, but you can also grow them in water if you like (though you will have to remember to feed the plant as water alone doesn’t have any nutrients in it.)
Jade Plant (Crassula Ovata)
Jade plant aka money plant (posh name: Crassula Ovata) is a succulent that is particularly easy to grow.
Like most succulents, Jade plants are fairly undemanding in terms of water – you can water them as infrequently as just every couple of weeks to one month.
Jade plants do enjoy plenty of light, but you can grow them in fairly low light rooms. If you do find they are etoliating (ie stretching to the light) you could put them closer to the window or even outside for a little while if in the summer.
Snake Plant / Mother in Law’s Tongue (Sansevieria trifasciata)
There are lots of different types of Sansevieria, and also different variations of Sansevieria trifasciata – some with thicker, rounder leaves.
Sansevierias tend to grow easily with little care required – just water them it occasionally and they will reward you with their stylish looks!
Pothos / Devil’s ivy (Epipremnum aureum)
No list of easy-to-grow houseplants is complete with the inclusion of Pothos.
A lot of people include a few different types of plant (sometimes incorrectly) under the name of Pothos – but we aren’t fussy – they all tend to grow well in relatively low light spaces.
Calathea
Calathea are a stunning family of plants, with varieties often available grown both big and small in garden centres and even supermarkets.
Calathea generally prefer a good amount of indirect sunlight, but are quite happy in low light spaces.
String of Hearts (Ceropegia woodii)
String of Hearts is one of our favourite plants at CSW. Not only are they stunningly beautiful with their heart shaped varying coloured leaves that cascade downwards, but they are relatively undemanding to look after.
Just put them somewhere where they look great with the stems hanging down with room to grow, and water them as required – every couple of weeks should be good.
