Far too often, we let our gardens get overgrown and out of shape.

The problem is that over the winter months, many of us just don’t feel like getting our hands dirty – it’s just too cold.

This means that when it gets to summer, and once again we want to spend time relaxing in our gardens, they don’t exactly, look inviting. Who wants to sunbathe in a garden that has more weeds than grass? Who wants to host a summer BBQ in a garden that has overgrown flower beds and rotting decking? No one, that’s who.

If your garden has got into a bad state over the winter, try to stay calm about the situation. It might be a little upsetting, but, believe it or not, it won’t take too long to fix.

To help you transform your garden into an area that you love, here are our four top tips:

Clear it out

The first thing you need to do, before even thinking about what you want your garden to look like is clear it out. Spend a day digging up weeds, cutting back overgrown plants and shrubs and just generally clearing up the space.

Get rid of any clutter in the garden by either throwing it away or storing it safely in your garage or shed. Having clutter in your garden – old children’s toys, gardening tools, etc., can make the space look a lot worse than it is. That’s why any old bits and bobs need to be thrown out or stored.

Create a plan

Once you have cleared your garden of weeds, overgrown plants and clutter, the next step is to create a plan. Have a look online to get some inspiration for what you could do with your garden – sites like Pinterest are good for this.

Look at how you garden looks now and think about how you would like it to look. You might be happy with the current layout, or you might want a complete overhaul, whatever you choose to do, it’s up to you.

Seek professional advice

Once you have come up with a plan for your garden, the next step is to think about how you can put that plan into action. If you are unsure how to go about some of the things you want to do, it might be a good idea to seek some professional advice.

For instance, say you want to build a deck in your garden but are unsure about the best wood to use. Or, imagine you fancy growing your own fruit but don’t know how to find a good nursery for fruit trees. In both of these instances, having a professional on hand to help would be incredibly useful.

Create a garden that looks good all year

To ensure that your garden doesn’t end up getting into a bad state, it’s a good idea to aim to create a garden that will look good all year.

Things like choosing plants that are hardy and able to survive the winter is a good idea, as is covering your decking with stain. If you don’t fancy going out in the cold and tending to your garden in the winter, hire a gardener to deal with this for you.

No matter what state your garden is in, by following these simple tips you can get it back to looking good in no time.
