Section 3: MAKING THE RIGHT START

Step Eleven: Why do I need the initial briefing meeting?

  • Having appointed your researcher, this first meeting is the official starting point of the research period and is one of the four most important tools available to you.
  • It will set the tone and the direction for both the project and your relationship with the researcher.
  • It is, therefore, vital that you give it enough time and thought and energy to get it right.
  • During the meeting you should discuss the brief and clarify the researcher’s approach to it. Agree any amendments in methodology and in procedure. Agree the terms of the contract and the way the tools listed in this guide will be used.
  • Listen to your researchers and their ideas in order to gain the most from their experience and creativity and discuss how this will inform your project.
  • Health Warning: This is the best opportunity you will have to ensure a positive result. If this meeting leaves you with any doubts or questions make sure you sort them out before the project proceeds any further.
  • "The best outcomes happen when the commissioners are prepared to participate in the process. The worst outcomes are when "they’re too busy" – that always rings alarm bells"
