The Social Research Association (SRA)
The Social Research Association was founded in the UK in 1978 to advance the conduct, development and application of social research. Its aims are:

  • to provide a forum for discussion and communication about social research activity in all areas of employment
  • to encourage the development of social research methodology, standards of work and codes of practice
  • to review and monitor the organisation and funding of social research
  • to promote the development of training and career structures for social researchers
  • to encourage the use of social research for formulating and monitoring social policy
  • The website gives details of all the SRA activities including training days, conferences, evening seminars and other events.


    Local Authorities Research & Intelligence Association (LARIA)
    LARIA (the Local Authorities Research & Intelligence Association) was established in 1974 to promote the role and practice of research within the field of local government and provide a supportive network for those conducting or commissioning research. LARIA publishes a range of guides, research studies and workshop and conference papers.


    The Royal Statistical Society (RSS)
    The Royal Statistical Society is one of the premier statistical societies in the world, with a high international reputation. It main purposes are:

  • To nurture the discipline of statistics by publishing a Journal, organising meetings, setting and maintaining professional standards, accrediting university courses and operating examinations.
  • To promote the discipline of statistics by disseminating and encouraging statistical knowledge and good practice with both producers and consumers of statistics, and in society at large.
  • To provide effective and efficient services to our members which will support their professional and academic interests and their endeavours to advance the other objectives of the Society.
  • The website provides information on events, courses and workshops, jobs and publications. The RSS does not provide statistical data on any subject.


    Market Research Society (MRS)
    With members in more than 70 countries, MRS is the world's largest association representing providers and users of market, social, and opinion research, and business intelligence. It is a major supplier of publications and information services, conferences and seminars, and many other meeting and networking opportunities for researchers. The website has a useful section on standards and guidelines.


    UK Evaluation Society (UKES)
    The UK Evaluation Society exists to promote and improve the theory, practice, understanding and utilisation of evaluation and its contribution to public knowledge and to promote cross-sector and cross-disciplinary dialogue and debate. The website provides information about the activities of the UKES and news about other evaluation activities, jobs, contracts, events, resources in the UK and internationally. Good Practice Guidelines, the principles and frameworks for action that are useful to guide evaluation practice in a variety of contexts, are also available from the website.


    Research Councils

    Economic & Social Research Council
    The Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) is the UK's leading research funding and training agency addressing economic and social concerns. Its aims to provide high quality research on issues of importance to business, the public sector and government. As part of the Council’s strategy to improve the standards of research methods across the UK social science community, it funds the Research Methods Programme which seeks to encourage and support the dissemination of good practice, including the enhancement of training programmes and training materials for the research community.

    Government Research

    Government Social Research Unit
    The Government Social Research Service (GSR) comprises approximately 1,000 social researchers. These GSR members work in twenty government departments and agencies, including the devolved administrations in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. The website offers career information, news, training, events and the latest methodological developments for government social researchers. The Government Social Research Unit (GSRU) in the Cabinet Office has produced guidance on research ethics and notes on policy evaluation and analysis which is also available from the website.
